It may be, that the packet loss of ath5k is the reason for this bug.

Thunderbird could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server
mail.gmx.net was lost in the middle of the transaction. (a mail with
attach). It works with the driver of http://snapshots.madwifi-
project.org/madwifi-trunk-current.tar.gz.
