Hmm did you update your initramfs? The compilation script doesnt seem to do it properly itself, so you have to do it manually.
in a command prompt type
sudo update-initramfs -vuk all

Failing that, does dmesg mention anything about b43?
in a command prompt type
dmesg | grep b43

and paste the output here
