Falvio, while I appreciate the response, I find it hard to believe that
it's a hardware issue given that the system works predictably without a
single complaint when I use the older kernel (2.6.31-21) but with the
newer kernel (2.6.32-22) it likewise predictably fails.  I've tried this
several times with both kernels, switching back and forth.

The keyboard and mouse are powered right up to the boot loader.  I have
a Logitech G500 mouse with LED indicators on the top that are turned on
when the mouse is receiving power, but once I get past the boot loader
with the new kernel the mouse turns off and does not come back on.  With
the older kernel everything works fine.

The failure is not sporadic in any way, I've had the system on since
last night with the older kernel and it works perfectly.
