[Bug 567914] Re: 10.04b with 2.6.32-21 locks hard on startx on Thinkpad X40

I've been able to access the hidden menu in grub2 and successfully boot the previous kernel, 2.6.31-21, without issue. I am currently using that kernel now and have configured grub2 to always boot that. Kernel 2.6.32-21 (also apparently the one used on the 10.4 cd), however, locks up on the splash screen. The following isn't a permanent fix, obviously, but may help those with bricked x40's like mine: (1) Press ESC during boot to get the hidden boot menu in grub2 (grub2 boots directly into the current selection without a menu by default) (2) select 2.6.31-21, assuming it's available (it was for me, but I upgraded from 9.10), (3) assuming you can get in, sudo vi /etc/default/grub and add/change the following:
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

Then, sudo update-grub.

That should cause grub2 to save the last selected menu option as the
default so that, basically, you boot into the last known good
(successful) kernel. Not a solution for this bug, just a work-around
for now.
