I want to add that when using Ubuntu 9.04 we tried uninstaling ALSA and
installing OSS, and then the microphone worked very slightly--we could
at least hear ourselves when using the sound recorder.  But then we
uninstalled it and reinstalled ALSA and then the microphone again did
not work at all.

Given this information, will your procedure work or should we do
something different with ALSA?
