@WeatherGod: AFAIK, I don't have "non-typical" ports. gnome-device-manager shows the following types of USB ports:
82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI
82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI

Incidentally, this started happening (in my case) only after upgrading to Lucid, and others also seem to have this problem -- see Bug #551949 and the following thread:
