** Description changed:

On Karmic (2.6.31 kernel) my laptop ran silently (no fans unless really
put through its paces), had long battery life (3.5 hours), and was cool.

Since upgrading to Lucid beta-2, it runs hot, the fan is always on (from
cold start it's off, but quickly comes on and stays on) and battery life
  is less than 2 hours.

Lucid Kernel: 2.6.32-20-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 12 15:20:57 UTC
  2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Laptop: Dell Studio 1555 with ATI graphics (but using OS driver).

Happy to help try things -- be great to get my laptop working properly
  again!
