** Description changed:
- Between 1-10 hrs of boot, active processes will gradually slow & stop --
- Firefox grayscreens, then mouse pointer unresponsive along with KB, then
- seconds on clock display stop (up to 2 minutes later) when cursor on
- terminal stops. When KB goes out no VT or NumLock/Scroll Lock toggle
- LEDs work, no SysRq+REISUB either. Only a hard reboot will restart the
- system.
+ Between 1-10 hrs after startup, active processes will slow & stop over
+ the span of 30 seconds to 2 minutes. For example, Firefox grayscreens,
+ then the mouse becomes unresponsive as does the KB; seconds on the clock
+ display stop (up to 2 minutes after Firefox grayscreen); cursor on the
+ terminal prompt stops blinking. When KB goes out no VT or
+ NumLock/Scroll Lock toggle LEDs work, no SysRq+REISUB either. Only a
+ hard reboot will restart the system.
I've tested the latest kernels, all with the same bug.
Currently:
$ uname -a
Linux lothario 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC
2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Other kernels that I've tested:
2.6.34-999-generic
2.6.34-020634rc7-generic
All yield the same results.
I had a similar problem on 9.10 Karmic, but didn't file a report, hoping
- that 10.04 would fix it.
+ that 10.04 would fix it. The most recent kernel version that does not
+ exhibit lockup is the most recent kernel version for 9.04 Jaunty.
- I've encountered the problem without FF running, only using the Terminal
- (screen, vim & python). The other Lucid freeze bug reports are similar,
- but in my case I notice absolutely no messages in any logs pertaining to
- this lock-up, when grepping for timestamps nearby to the lockup time.
+ The problem is not specific to FF, as I've encountered the freeze
+ without FF running, only using the Terminal (screen, vim & python).
+
+ The other Lucid freeze bug reports are similar, but there is some
+ discrepancy in the log messages. Sometimes there are no relevant
+ messages in the log files as revealed by grepping for timestamps around
+ the time of the lockups.
