Vouching for Tony in his assessment (brightness in GRUB), I would like
to add, if it helps, that using setpci doesn't work in X, either. (e.g.
"setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=B2", etc.) There are two brightness settings
listed, default level '5', the value of one can be changed (IIRC), but
neither changes the actual screen brightness.
Also, while the Fn keys do pull up the brightness app now (default
kernel for Lucid does not; for this notebook, it's Fn + Up/Down), using
up also produces "±", as it's gives keycode 126.
I am using kernel 2.6.34-020634rc6-generic, and checked with a couple of
other kernels in this range.
