Upgraded from Karmic (no problems) to Lucid (problem as above)

Have not tried altering the grub, but disabling the ethernet and then
shutting down works.

except.....
the nvidia settings are not remembered, so I have to reset System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects every time on startup, otherwise Thunderbird locks itself to the top left of the screen, and I get that stupid black cross for a cursor.
