Have tested Ubuntu 10.04 LTS desktop and alternate installation CDs with both amd64 and i386 architecture and found nothing - system always boots and works without a hitch. Tried to boot again from live DVD amd64 where the issue was observed three times, and this time found nothing - the issue has mysteriously disappeared.
The only change I had to made to my system is to replace a USB receiver of my wireless mouse. The previous one was probably damaged in another machine sometimes earlier and has finally died. But could it be a faulty mouse receiver to blame in Gnome desktop to freeze immediately upon connecting to a wireless network? May be an effect of transmission from laptop's WiFi in a close proximity to failing mouse receiver? I am really puzzled...

Conclusion: by now I am unable to confirm the existence of the issue at
all.
