I observed the exact same behaviour as described in this bug report on
my HP EliteBook 8530w (64 bit ubuntu, fresh install (not updated from
9.10)). After some digging in the gnome-power-manager code I found a
solution that worked for me (See post #20 on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/555122 ). Maybe the fix proposed solves this bug as well ?
