My card used to work fine on an older version of Ubuntu (8.10 or 9.04?) with madwifi, but the new ath5k doesn't work.
I can see networks, but keep getting prompted for the password. Had the same problem with Karmic, still not fixed.
Installing hand-compiled kernel modules is a nightmare because they keep getting overwritten with every kernel update.
