Mmm... just noticed how old this post is, oh well for what it's worth...
I had the same problem when I installed Crunchbang 10, Statler on my Studio 1537 but, I found out by accident that the mixer on the volume control does not have the various options listed in alphabetical order. ONCE I REALIZED THS I then found the microphone option, checked it and hey presto, I had sound recording again.

I had been all round the block and back again and was about to give up on this till Statler became a stable release.
Now that I have sound I am over the moon.
I have no real issues to cry about now.

I presume the touchpad centre tap will be corrected before final release (it works with Crunchbang 9.04).
Apart from this I use Statler for everything that I can.
Unlike Ubuntu (Crunchbang is based upon Ubuntu - Statler is now more Debian based but, basically the same) there are no problems about third party licenses for audio and video codecs so, everything works straight off.

The system is very fast because it is minimalist but, I like it and so
do many others.

I have a problem trying to connect to other computers at work but, I am
sure this is a small thing and I am not supported at work using Linux so
no big deal. I can still use the Internet and Openoffice for a lot of
things, Thunderbird for email and Skype if I need to so I can't
complain.

Hope you get your mic sorted. I don't think it is a hardware problem as
such more like something not switched on somewhere.

Happy hunting.
