Update:

The problem not only occurs when suspending the machine by closing the
notebook, it also occurs when set to hibernate.

Hard shutdown required with power button. Reboots with no networking
enabled.

This machine is running the newest Nvidia driver recommended by Ubuntu
for 3d effects, Version 173.
