This bug has just returned for me as well, this afternoon, under Lucid.
The symptoms are the same as before -- CPU spikes about every 3 seconds,
the ethernet port's lights remain perpetually lit, ethernet is non-
functional, and my CPU process monitor graph looks just like
JohnAspinall's on the forum thread. Removing the e1000e module (``sudo
modprobe -r e1000e``) squelches the CPU spikes. Attempting to
reinstall the module (``sudo modprobe e1000e``) takes approximately 2
minutes during which the CPU is pegged; after reinstaling the module,
the port lights remain lit and the port remains nonfunctional, but the
CPU spikes are gone.

If I boot into the previous kernel version (2.6.32-21-generic) I have no
problem, eth0 works as expected with no aberrant spikes or stuck lights.
