I am sorry, I did not try the upstream kernel.
However I do have some other ecvidence may help

Initial install of Lucid - problem manifested
removed empathy, added Pidgin and aMSN - propblem still manifested
removed openjdk, replace with Sun java jre - problem has not appeared again to date

I have added other software, but to the best of my knowledge, these are
the only REPLACEMENTS.

The system also feels more stable since I ditched open jdk. There were
occasions when program would appear to freeze only to revive again
minutes later. That has not happened either recently.

Hiope this is not too unspecific. If I had a spare system to experiment
on, I would happily do tests, but I have only the one and its my
production machine.
