** Description changed:

+ 5/17/2010 12:34 PM EST -- Good news I tested linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201005121008_i386.deb and it didn't have the problem. The system booted without any issues. So it appears it got fixed between linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic-pae and this new version.
+ ========
  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic-pae

I have a DELL OptiPlex 170L. My theory is that the kernel is somehow
throwing the machine in a hibernate / sleep mode upon bootup. Maybe it
has something to do with the video driver? (guessing ...)

The system doesn't get very far into the boot process. I have GRUB2 set
to count down 15 seconds, I don't even see the count down start if it
  tries to boot from linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic-pae.

My system automatically installed this kernel update and then it
wouldn't boot any longer. I interrupt the Grub2 and pick the previous
kernel and it boots. I successfully run linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic-
pae. I have tried putting the boot option i915.modeset=1 in grub2 and
boot linux-image-2.6.32-22 but that has no affect. I have also tried
the nomodeset option with no affect.

When I do: lspci I get:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporaation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
00:060 System peripheral: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P Processor to I/O Memory Interface (rev 02).

That appears to be the video processor built into the motherboard. In
the BIOS I have tried the two possible settings: OnBoard and Auto. It
does the same thing when I set it to either of those options.
