no_timer_check is the same as the first thing we tried
(didn't work, sadly)

$ grep timer /proc/interrupts; sleep 10; grep timer /proc/interrupts
  0:         15          1   IO-APIC-edge      timer
LOC:   78595248   12063210   Local timer interrupts
  0:         15          1   IO-APIC-edge      timer
LOC:   78596460   12063320   Local timer interrupts

(though the sleep actually took about 3 seconds).

the "noapic" option doesn't do anything either, sadly.
