I disabled the people near me account in empathy after stopping vmware's
services (/etc/init.d/vmware stop) to avoid a crash.

Then I shut down empathy, restarted vmware's services
(/etc/init.d/vmware start,) opened empathy, and connected. No crash on a
updated Ubuntu Lucid system.

This is a much better workaround, thanks!
