downloaded and installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/daily/current/linux-
image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201005231006_i386.deb with sudo dpkg
-i .

rebooted, and while in the grub interface, I removed the "quiet splash"
from the kernel line.  Continued booting, and once the init bottom
scripts started running, screen goes blank and monitor displays "out of
sync" error.  Reboot again, and booting with "quiet splash" removed and
adding "radeon.modeset=0" leads me back to a working system.  So no, the
upstream kernel doesn't solve this issue.  Removing needs-upstream-
testing tag.
