Concerning the obligatory fsck every 20 mounts with Lucid:
With the splash screen _off_ , at 30 seconds of black screen the console reports that
the fsck is being done by util-linux-ng 2.17.2; This lasts one minute 40 seconds before continuing to the login phase.  No report of found errors on /dev/sda4, the Ubuntu partition.
