Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kernel-package

I run make-kpkg on an amd64 dual core processor like this

make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version dick1.0 kernel_image
kernel_headers

and this is the error. The compile works but look at the directories it is trying to write to? 2.6.32-custom1.0 Where ON EARTH DOES custom1.0 come from. I typed in dick1.0 as the appendage. Once it said 2.6.32-live1.0 for the lib/modules.
I have install linux from scratch (ubuntu lucid) but I keep getting this failure as make-kpkg wants to write to weird directories that I do not type in. I even turned of CONCURRENCY_LEVEL, but this makes no difference.

WARNING: Couldn't open directory /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32/debian/linux-image-/lib/modules/2.6.32-custom1.0: No such file or directory
FATAL: Could not open /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32/debian/linux-image-/lib/modules/2.6.32-custom1.0/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory

make[1]: *** [debian/stamp/install/linux-image-] Error 2

make: *** [kernel_image] Error 2

I used /usr/bin/time -v for the below:
Command exited with non-zero status 2
	Command being timed: "make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version dick1.0 kernel_image kernel_headers"
	User time (seconds): 42.74
	System time (seconds): 17.58
Percent of CPU this job got: 101%
