I just did a fresh install of 10.04 final (fresh ISO downloaded today). 
The Compaq 610 switched off after approximately 30 seconfs.
During this time the screen  displayed the new Ubuntu logo together with three red and two white dots below.  There is no visible action on the screen during this 30 second period.
Some people might find this irritating. I can live with it.
