I'm not sure if this is exactly the same problem but updating my Lucid caused a boot error stating that /dev/disk/by-uuid/<uuid> was missing.
This was reproducable everytime with kernel 2.6.32.22.
I'm not sure what kernel I was using prior to the update but during the update when I was prompted to keep my original grub menu.lst file I selected yes. (I'm still using grub v1)
So I'm wondering if I'd already had 2.6.32.22 because rebooting with the updated Lucid gives me a choice of 2.6.32.22 from menu.lst which I'd selected to keep from my original version however booting 2.6.32.22 fails with the uuid error.
I never had this problem prior to this update.
Fortunately for me, the update process had installed kernel 2.6.32.25 files so I just edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to include 2.6.32.25 as well and now I can boot OK 100% of the time.
Therefore using kernel 2.6.32.25 has resolved the problem for me.
