OK, flickering problem seems to be fixed in rc6 kernel. I am using the
mainline 2.6.36   dated 201010021408 from Ubuntu and it no longer
flickers !

(still fails to give the internal screen a name, calls it (null)1 and
still fails to set, automaticly, the correct screen resolution for my
external HP LA2405wg screen but thats easy to deal with !)
