x86_64 GNU/Linux

AMD 64 quad processor same problem 
USB thumb drives formatted to fat, vfat, ntfs, ext3.  
Various sizes 1gb - 16gb
various manufacturers

initial fast copy +320mb (or so it says) then slows to a crawl if it finishes at all.  via command line and nautilus.
When I do boot into windows on the same machine no problems whatsoever other than the fact I am in windows. :(
I have had this problem since 9.04 maybe before but I am using ubuntu for everything now.
