@mättu (#183): I used:
    alps_ec_write(psmouse, 0x0005, 0x07)
to disable the tapping completely (this also disables the corner tap as a right click).

One of the earlier patches (from @Andrew?) had notes about what the
different bits controlled - I based mine on that documentation.
