I note that I also get the problem reported by CandyGuitar. Some notes:

Does not affect external monitor, so I can use external monitor when the laptop screen is blank.
Adjusting Screen brightness (via FN-F6 and FN-F7) adjusts the brightness of the backlight, but screen remains blank
Suspending and waking up often causes screen to come right.
Occurs with stock Ubuntu Kernel and also 2.6.36-020636rc3-generic
Does not only occur when computer is idle, once the screen  disappeared while I was typing.
I have not yet been able to reproduce this problem in Ubuntu 10.10, but I have only been using Ubuntu 10.10.
