Same problem.
Dell XPS Studio 16.
ATi Radeon HD3760.

Has occurred in both 10.04 and 10.10, the only thing open could be a
single web browser window and a text editor, and the heat, fan speed,
battery life is similar to if a modern 3D video game was open in
windows7.
