Public bug reported:
Initially I performed an update from 10.04 to 10.10 and found the new
kernel to cause my system to be so slow it became unusable (this problem
went away when I selected the previous 10.04 kernel at the Grub menu). I
decided to perform a clean-install, assuming the upgrade had gone wrong.
The clean install still resulted in the same behavior. I am therefore
assuming this has something to do with the kernel (though I could be
wrong).
I have the system monitor gnome applet running and it tells me that
there is something going on that is taking a large amount of CPU
resources. When I run top or try to find out what process is taking up
the CPU, nothing is reported as out-of-the-ordinary.
Everything is sluggish and leaving the computer on for hours does not
seem to make it better. Whatever is going on is persistent. I have not
detected any network activity resulting from this CPU activity. There
does seem to be some hard drive activity, but it isn't consistent use
and appears more as occasional blips.
Anything specific I can provide that will help identify the issue?
