Got it. I installed http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux
/linux-image-2.6.36-1-generic_2.6.36-1.7_amd64.deb and now all is good.
Anybody have any idea what is causing the problem in the 2.6.35 kernel?
