I can confirm this bug with the same SATA controller, running Ubuntu
10.10 (linux-image-server kernel).

The controller does not ignore all hard drives. It realizes a Seagate
ST380013AS, but ignores another Hitachi HDD

@David, Tomdkat: It would be nice to know which harddrives you use
