I'm affected too.
My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6660ep, with ubuntu 10.10.
LIRC never worked (since ubuntu 9.10), even with tons of different configurations.
mode2 and irw never showed anything but errors.

I'll try to send the apport-collect info. If I can help in anything
else...
