Public bug reported:
I've noticed spamming from the kernel in /var/log/syslog regarding
exceeding the CPU and MCP thermal or power limits:
Sep 1 11:36:28 demeter kernel: [98490.237702] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: MCP power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:36:33 demeter kernel: [98495.244545] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: MCP power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:36:38 demeter kernel: [98500.231526] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:36:43 demeter kernel: [98505.228451] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:36:48 demeter kernel: [98510.225343] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:36:53 demeter kernel: [98515.222314] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: MCP power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:36:58 demeter kernel: [98520.219208] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:37:03 demeter kernel: [98525.216174] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:37:08 demeter kernel: [98530.213086] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: MCP power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:37:13 demeter kernel: [98535.210010] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
Sep 1 11:37:18 demeter kernel: [98540.212247] intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: CPU power or thermal limit exceeded
I get one message every few seconds. There seems to be no other effect,
as my system appears to be running at a reasonable temperature (isn't
hot to the touch), and doesn't crash or hang. Perhaps the only thing is
that battery seems to run out fairly fast, though I can't provably say
there is any relation between the two issues :)
In any case, sensors report the following:
