Hi,
This reported bug is similar to my experience. I've been successfully running ubuntu 10.04 for a while. However, as of yesterday, I began to experience problems. After booting, I get the ubuntu screen with red dots, then the screen goes blank and I am dumped to the command line. So, I never get to the desktop.
I tried the following without success:
1. Based on a troubleshooting guide at ubuntu geek:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
sudo reboot now
2. updated software using
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
3. Tried the recovery mode for 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-24-generic (recovery mode)
a. I attempted to run in failsafex mode but it takes me back to the Recovery Menu
b. I selected dpkg from the Recovery Menu to try to repair broken packages but there were no updates
My laptop is a Compaq Presario F730US with AMD 64 Athlon x2 with nvidia
graphics.
I'm a complete linux novice. Many thanks for any help.
Steve
