Status update:  an update to 2.6.35 has broken CPU frequency scaling,
confirmed via a fresh build of 2.6.35-19 with frequency scaling
disabled.  This regression negatively impacts anything having to do with
timing, which is everything.  The latest mainline kernel still contains
the bug.
