FIXED!
Without update I removed gnome-screensaver and could not resume Xorg after resume.  I then did an apt-get upgrade+update, rebooted and did a hib/resume and A-OK, THANKS.

I still cannot get suspend to work on this IdeaPad=y530, but I can live with hibernation which works IF I execute :
"echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk"

Suspend works well on my desktop and two other laptops.
