It happened twice in my ubuntu 10.10 beta, but the last time I
reinstalled ubuntu didn't happen anymore.

Maybe was a series of partial upgrades...

And BTW it doesn't happen with this kernel http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35.4-maverick/

(and in my case I'm on a 32bit installation)
