[Bug 638228] [NEW] Give us back a rescue mode that deserves the name!

Public bug reported:

Since Ubuntu 9.10 we have plymouth, ureadahead and upstart and whatnot,
which are nice to have in many ways.

Something being out of order is not one of them.

Way too often, small configuration problems that were no problem in
earlier versions do now cause the system to hang at boot time with no
obvious reason being offered to the user. This would not be a major
issue if the usual rescue option in grub would still deserve its name,
which it does not. If, for example, a mount entry does not resolve
properly you are totally out of luck as an admin with no direct console
access because the so-called "rescue" system will get you exactly
nowhere. (As a personal side note: The bug reporting that has been open
for months and still is without being fixed which is an EPIC FAIL
regarding the fact that Ubuntu apparently heads for the enterprise
server market with tools like launchpad and stuff...)

Bottom line is:
What is needed BADLY in 9,04 and up is a dedicated rescue solution, maybe on its own initrd, that leaves out all the cuddly comfort crap and gets you to a shell, no matter what! Period.
