Just booted 10.10 beta Live CD and yes, the problem still exists, with the same workaround (open / close the CD-ROM drive).  
The CD-ROM and DVD-RW drives are IDE.  

Note that there are NOT separate DVD/CD/HDD activity lights -- there is
a single LED for all three.
