I have the same problem. Adding radeon.new_pll=0 to the kernel command line solved the issue for me.
A big thanks for this answer. I also have problems with a strange sound that come from my laptop and this problem is dissapear after I wrote radeon.new_pll=0.

My laptop:
Asus F3JP
ATI X1700
