I have almost the same problem but with a Promise SX-6000 controller. It's installed as an i2o block device and works correct with 1 or 2GB of Ram memory. 
If I install 3GB, 4GB, 6GB  of Ram, the controller doesn't work anymore. There are no more the /dev/i2o devices. In Normal state with 2GB Ram I have /dev/i2o/hda1 and /dev/i2o/hdb1.
Also if I try load manually "modprob i2o_block" I got no devices.... The i2o_core modul seems to be correctly loaded.
