Ubuntu newbie with the same prob

Dell Latitude E6410, Core i5, 4GB
BIOS A03
Intel Graphics 
trying to install Ubuntu 10.04

I don't really understand all this talk about different kernels ...
sorry.  Have tried so far multiple permutations to do with editing the
boot line (i.e. nomodeset, i915.modeset=1, etc.)

Not yet in a state of despair but my enthusiasm is being pared away.
Has anyone with this machine succeeded in installing a previous version
of Ubuntu?  If so, what version and were there any tweaks you had to
make?
