Hi i have TP-LINK TL-WN821N usb and i suffered for a long time from this issue,
but now I manually installed the carl9170 from
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170
as Angus suggested,
and it looks really good so far.
steady connection for a day now, even with aMule running & downloading with nice speed ( aMule used to help ar9170usb driver to crush very quick for some reason).

I really hope this new driver + firmware are included in final ubuntu
10.10.
