i'll have to apologize if it indeed turns out to be a hardware problem.

No, i've not but i just kicked off a long self smartctl test which
allegedly will take 115 minutes to complete

sorry, i had not since i did not suspect a hardware failure before

oh yes, constant clicking noise with the access light blinking

i was under the impression that fsck will record the problem and move on
to the next sector shortly.  Bear with me that i know fsck as much as i
know Neptune, :-(      Does that mean all the sectors after 70% are in
bad shape?
