Summary: kernel does not properly reactivate LCD panel on lid
                    close/open
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: linux
        AssignedTo: fabbione at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: zackw at panix.com
         QAContact: kernel-team at lists.ubuntu.com

On my laptop, if I close the lid, wait for the screen to turn off, then reopen
the lid, the screen backlight does not turn back on until I press the magic key
sequence that forces the BIOS to reactivate the screen, behind the kernel's
back. I can type blind and be heard when the machine is in this state.
Switching VTs doesn't help. This happens whether I was in X or a text console
before closing the lid.

The machine is a Dell Latitude C840, and according to X the display chip is an
Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go. Frame buffer console modules are loaded but I am not
sure if they are in use. Kernel package is linux-image-2.6.10-4-686; this
effect has been reproducible with every 2.6.x kernel I've ever run on this laptop.
