If the problem persists through a hard reset, the USB problem is unlikely to be
a kernel issue, but rather a hardware or BIOS problem.
It's more difficult to say regarding the instability, though it's certainly
possible that the same hardware problem, or a different one, is at fault.
Please send /proc/cpuinfo, /proc/interrupts and dmesg output
if you boot in "recovery mode", hotplug should show you the name of each module
as it loads. if it tends to crash when loading aa certain module, that might be
enlightening.
