1000Hz and pre-empt would generally be considered fairly standard for a 
desktop system. There's the potential for small loss of throughput (due 
to increased scheduling overhead), but the primary reasons for not using 
a 1000Hz kernel (ie, noticably greater power consumption on laptops) 
were removed when the tickless kernel landed.
