Bryce,
The 2.6.30-2.3 upload of the Karmic kernel has some support for
swizzling KMS at module load time, the default being KMS=0. I've tested
that it truly wrecks your experience by adding:
/etc/modprobe.d/options: options i915 modeset=1
Hopefully you can use this to start enabling the KMS enabled X driver.
